District Dining, Surry Hills

Mum is in town and I decided to have a nice lunch with her. 🙂 The new kid in the block is the establishment District Dining by Warren Turnbull, owner of two-hatted chef Assiette. The atmosphere is a lot more relaxed with windows, fresh lilies and wooden high chairs.

The best seat in the house by the window.

Crispy quail eggs, tarragon mayonnaise, white anchovies

This is the recommended dish by the waitress, crispy quail eggs, tarragon mayonnaise, white anchovies. I have heard raves about it from the next table but for me the dish was too mediocre to be singing praises about. Part of the reason may be the novelty of quail eggs to Westerners, whereas for Asians, quail eggs are easily found in food. Nevertheless, the eggs are crispy and gooey. Perfect combo with the mayo!

Roasted spatchcock, romesco sauce, spiced chickpea, coriander

Roasted spatchcock, romesco sauce, spiced chickpea, coriander is a Moroccan inspired dish with strong turmeric and cumin flavors. Juicy chicken, very enjoyable indeed.

Baby snapper, king crab, sweetcorn, congee

Baby snapper, king crab, sweetcorn, congee has strong predominant Asian influence. Crispy snapper with the smoothest blend of congee. However, it was another let down for me as it has nothing to make me crave for it again. It is actually reminiscent of the congee my mother would coax me to eat whenever I’m sick. Not a good comparison at all.

Strawberries, raspberries, meringue, vanilla cream

I was actually relieved when it was time for dessert- the saving grace! Strawberries, raspberries, meringue, vanilla cream is such a beautiful divine blend. Deconstructed, the crispy meringue compliments the luscious strawberries and cream. The best part is the little surprise of crackle you get from the dried candied raspberries.
Overall, I was pretty disappointed at the main dishes. It might be because I had high expectations for District Dining or I could have ordered the wrong things. Anywhoots, still an enjoyable experience 🙂
