Ms. G’s, Sydney

Yes, Foodyphile finally ventured to Victoria St to try out this relatively new talk of the town by Merivale. Duo Lotus chefs Dan Hong and Jowett Yu took Asian dishes with a modern twist.

Ms.G’s is notoriously known for its long queue. We waited for 2 hours to get a table on a Saturday night. The torture of waiting was slightly better when we decided to go for pizza at Doughboy next door for appetizer 😉

I love the run-down yet warm feel of Ms.G’s. It has the excitement of adventure to discover little random things and touches to the furniture. The pink neon light six two (621 is the E number for monosodium glutamate), is a word play for Ms.G’s. There are graffiti walls at one side, old rice sacks adorning the ceiling and little figurines here and there. The toilets are covered with old brown newspapers from all over Southeast Asia and metal buckets with vintage taps as your sink. Nice touch right?

We also amused ourselves with their cocktails in bubble tea cups. I love the novelty of sipping my Pina Colada (and tiny pearls) with pink plastic straws.

Cocktails served in BubbleTea Style cups.

Mini bánh mì,crisp pork belly and pickles.

This first dish, Mini bánh mì- crisp pork belly, has set tongues wagging! Pickled cucumber, carrots and the most luscious and crispy pork belly slice I’ve ever tried. The bread feels a bit too chewy and sticky for my liking, but overall its a bánh mì with a modern twist. I could easily gobbled down a dozen of them!

Egg noodles with XO sauce, braised duck, soft poached egg.

This dish looks deceivingly simple but its actually a flavoursome dish. The slightly spicy XO sauce and subtle runny taste of the poached egg blend well with the bak chor mee noodle. Foodyphile would gladly go just for this dish!

Jow’s Sweet & Sour lamb ribs.

Jow’s Sweet & Sour lamb ribs is crispy and fall-off-the-bone chunks of tender lamb meat. These beasts are finger licking good! Strong cumin flavour is reminiscent of Indian and Moroccan dishes.

The let down of the night is Braised beef shin “Hue Style”, konnyaku noodles, lemongrass, chilli broth. The thick beef chunks are bland and lack in flavour. We ended up slurping the broth away, leaving behind chunks of hard beef.

“Stoner’s Delight” doughnut ice cream, chocolate, rice bubble, pretzel, peanut brittle, passionfruit marshmallow.

Desserts in Ms.G’s are filled with all the fun factor! This dessert particularly caught our attention- “Stoner’s Delight” doughnut ice cream, chocolate, rice bubble, pretzel, peanut brittle, passionfruit marshmallow. The ice cream literally tastes like strawberry jam doughnut! Amazing? I thought so. The marshmallow leans more towards a pannacotta consistency. This dessert is so reminiscent of my childhood snacks that I could not help but scrape every last bit of it.
